2008 UNIONDALE, NY - Long Island Lizards midfielder and 2004 Washington College graduate Stephen Berger (Columbia, MD/Mount St. Joseph) has been selected to play for the Eastern Conference team in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game to be held Thursday, July 17th, at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, CO. The game will air live on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. This is Berger's second consecutive MLL All-Star Game selection; he scored three goals in his All-Star Game debut last season. Through eight games this year, Berger, now in his fourth MLL season, has tallied 22 goals and four assists for the Lizards. He is currently fifth in the league in goals scored and tied for 11th in total points. The Lizards are currently 5-3 on the season and tied for first place in the Eastern Conference. For the second year in a row, Berger and San Francisco Dragons defenseman Eric Martin, a 2004 graduate of Salisbury University who will play for the Western Conference team, are the only two MLL All-Stars from Division III schools. One of the most outstanding players in Washington College history, Berger polished off a stellar collegiate career at Washington in 2004, scoring a school-record 94 points on 53 goals and 41 assists. He was named the 2004 Co-Midfielder of the Year for Division III. He was also named the Centennial Conference Player of the Year and the ECAC South Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, was recognized as a first team All-American for the second straight season and as an All-American for the third year in a row. Berger totaled 135 goals, 106 assists, 241 points, and 276 ground balls in four years at WC. In addition to being a graduate of Washington College, Berger served as an assistant coach for the Shoremen for the 2005 and 2006 seasons and returned as a volunteer assistant for the 2008 season. |
