Shoremen Outlast Wolverines, 93-89
Kines Posts First Career Double-Double

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) posted his first-career double-double with a career-best and team leading 10 rebounds and tied his personal-high with 18 points as host Washington College downed visiting Wesley College, 93-89, in non-conference men's basketball action tonight at the Cain Athletic Center in a contest pitting Delmarva rivals. The Shoremen improve to 4-3 on the season, while the Wolverines fall to 3-4.

In a game that had 15 lead changes, 14 of which came in the second half, it was Wesley who jumped out early and grabbed its biggest lead of the night at 15-8 with 13:35 left in the first half on a free throw by Alphonzo Wright. The Shoremen answered with seven straight points and knotted the score at 15-15 on a three-point basket by Kines. With the score tied at 19-19, the Shoremen scored seven straight points to grab a 26-19 lead on a layup by freshman guard Doug Holcombe (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) with 7:06. The seven-point lead was also Washington's biggest lead of the night which they achieved on four occasions. The Shoremen took a 30-23 lead with 5:38 left in the first half, but Wesley went on a 17-11 run to close out the opening 20 minutes that was completed on a traditional three-point play by Sean McAndrew with one-tenth of a second to go to cut the hosts lead to 41-40 at halftime.

In the second half, Wesley scored the opening five points to take a 45-41 lead with 18:18 left in the contest on a Wright free throw. Washington responded with a 11-6 run to take a 52-51 lead with 15:22 to go on a triple by senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson). The Shoremen led 56-55 before the Wolverines went on a 9-2 run to take a 64-58 lead with 11:22 remaining on a pair of free throws by Evan Martin. Wesley led by five points at 68-63 with 10 minutes left in the game when Washington scored seven of the next eight points to grab a 70-69 lead with 7:56 on a fast break layup by Kines. Wesley answered with a 7-2 spurt to take a 76-72 lead with 5:50 left before Washington mounted its final charge. Washington hit three free throws in a 19-second span to cut it to 76-75 with 4:40 left and following a Wesley free throw, evened the score at 77-77 with 4:15 remaining on a jumper in the paint by senior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood). The Shoremen took the lead for good at 80-77 on a traditional three-point play by freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) with just 3:45 to go. The Shoremen capped the 10-1 run with 2:57 left on a pair of free throws by Breslin. Washington built up its lead to seven points at 90-83 with 29 ticks left, but Wesley got a layup and foul shot by Martin and a trifecta by Rudy Thomas sandwiched around a Kohlrus free throw for Washington to trim the deficit to 91-89 with just 14 seconds to go. Breslin however went to the charity stripe and nailed two free throws to seal the deal for the hosts.

For Washington, Kohlrus led all players with 19 points and was one of five Shoremen to tally double figures. Freshman forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) had 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high two blocks, while junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) had 13 points, six rebounds and led all players in steals with three. Breslin scored 11 points, nine of the 11 coming in the final 3:45 of the tilt. Junior guard Matt Hamm (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) dished out a game-best and career-high eight assists, while junior guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) totaled a personal-best seven assists.

For Wesley, Martin and James Stratton each netted 18 points to lead the Wolverines and were two of six to score in double digits for the visitors. Wright had a double-double of 15 points and a game-best 14 rebounds. Rashawn Johnson scored 14 points, Kevin Johnson chipped in with 11 points and McAndrew added 10 points.

Washington shot 50% in the win, while Wesley shot 47% and the Shoremen outrebounded the Wolverines by a 47-42 margin. Washington dished out 26 assists to just 12 for Wesley.

This was the first meeting in Chestertown between the two schools since a dramatic 125-124 double overtime victory for the Shoremen on January 30, 2003.

The Shoremen return to action on Saturday, January 3, with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference road game against Salisbury.
