30, 2008 STEVENSON, MD Washington College held off Eastern Shore rival Salisbury University, 69-66, to capture the third-place game of the Provident Pride of Maryland this afternoon at Stevenson University. The third-place finish for the Shoremen (2-2) is Washington's highest in the four-year history of the tournament. Salisbury (1-5) opened up an 11-4 lead to start the game, but a 22-6 run by the Shoremen, capped off by a jumper by freshman guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) with 5:50 left in the first half, gave Washington a 26-17 advantage. The Shoremen led by as many as 11 points in the opening stanza before a Greg Palmer jumper at the buzzer cut the lead to 37-28 at the intermission. Salisbury opened the second half by outscoring WC, 29-17, taking a 57-54 lead on a lay-up by Sean Whittaker with just under nine minutes left. Schittino answered with a three-pointer for the Shoremen to knot the game back up at 57-57, starting a 10-0 run for Washington which ended on another Schittino three that made it 64-57 with just over four minutes left. Salisbury then went on a 9-3 spurt to pull within one point on a Devin Jones three-pointer with 1:32 left to make it 67-66. Washington junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) hit a clutch jumper to make it 69-66 with 59 seconds to play and then grabbed a rebound on the other end with under 40 seconds left. Chambers had a three-pointer rim out on the next WC possession and Salisbury called time-out with 8.1 seconds to go. Luther Weedon hoisted the potential game-tying three for the Sea Gulls with four seconds to play, but the ball remained loose until the clock expired as Washington held on for the win. Senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) posted game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds for Washington. Schittino scored a career-high 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, while Cambers added 12 points and six boards. Freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) added 13 points for WC, matching his career high. Palmer led Salisbury with 11 points. Preston Faulk was the only other Sea Gull in double figures, finishing with 10 points. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 7:30 p.m. contest at 12th-ranked and defending conference champion Ursinus. |
