29, 2008 STEVENSON, MD St. Mary's College topped Washington College, 88-60, in the semifinal round of the Provident Pride of Maryland tonight at Stevenson University. The Seahawks (4-0) will play Johns Hopkins in tomorrow's Provident Pride of Maryland Championship game at 6:30 p.m., while the Shoremen (1-2) will play in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. St. Mary's opened up a 26-17 lead at the start of the game, but a 9-0 run by the Shoremen knotted the score at 26-26 with 7:16 left in the opening half. The Seahawks closed out the half with a 9-1 spurt to take a 43-33 lead into the intermission after a pair of free throws by Camontae Griffin with just under four seconds left in the half. The Seahawks then opened the second half on a 12-3 run to open up a 55-36 lead with 16:18 left in the half and controlled the game the rest of the way. The 28-point final margin was the Seahawks' largest lead of the game. Griffin poured in 21 points for St. Mary's, as did Alex Franz, who also swiped a tournament-record nine steals, upping his two-game tournament total to a record 12. Calvin Wise had nine points and nine rebounds for the Seahawks. Junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) paced the Shoremen with 18 points, while freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) and senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) each finished with nine. St. Mary's shot 51% in the game and held a 43-34 advantage in rebounds. The Seahawks also turned the ball over just 12 times to Washington's 23. |
