25, 2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD Host Washington College opened the second half on a 27-9 run to open up a 25-point lead en route to an 89-76 win over visiting Stevenson University tonight in the first round of the Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament. The Shoremen (1-1) will play in Saturday's semifinals against St. Mary's (MD), while the Mustangs (0-4) will play McDaniel in Saturday's consolation semifinals. The tournament's final rounds on Saturday and Sunday will be hosted by Stevenson University. Stevenson jumped out to an early 20-14 lead, but a 16-0 run by the Shoremen, capped off by a lay-up from freshman forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) with 6:13 left in the half to give Washington a 30-20 lead. The Mustangs whittled the lead down to three points before the break, but the Shoremen scored the final four points of the half, including a put-back at the buzzer by junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti), to take a 40-33 lead into the intermission. Washington's defense blanketed the Mustangs during the Shoremen's big second-half run, holding Stevenson to 3-of-10 shooting from the field and forcing seven turnovers during the first 8:58 of the period. A three-pointer by freshman guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) with 11:02 remaining gave Washington its biggest lead of the game at 67-42. The Shoremen led by at least 11 points the rest of the way. Senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) led Washington with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Naymick totaled 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting from the free-throw line in 17 minutes off the bench. Junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) added 15 points, while freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) chipped in 13. Schittino added nine points, amking all three of his field-goal attempts and both of his free throws. Greg Collins scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the line for the Mustangs. Greg Woody added 19 points, while Chaise Lancaster had 11 points and Kerry Duggan contributed a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards. Washington shot 45% from the field in the game, while Stevenson shot 39%. The Mustangs held a slim 45-44 advantage on the boards, but Washington finished with 11 fewer turnovers to Stevenson, 13 to 24. The Shoremen's semifinal game against St. Mary's Saturday is slated for an 8:00 p.m. start. |
