14, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD Junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) tallied a team-best 15 points as host Washington College beat visiting McDaniel, 74-57, on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference men's basketball contest at Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen improve to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the Centennial, while the Green Terror fall to 17-6 and 12-4 respectively. Washington has now won 16 consecutive home games over McDaniel and have not lost to the Green Terror since 1982 in Chestertown. Trailing 37-29 at halftime, McDaniel opened the second half on a 15-8 run to cut Washington's lead to 45-44 on a layup by Josh McKay with 13:25 left in the game. Following a Washington turnover and McDaniel steal, Chad Arrington missed the dunk and the Shoremen got the rebound. On the ensuing possession, freshman guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) nailed a three-pointer to put Washington up 48-44 with 12:57 left. The Schittino shot ignited a 24-2 run over the next 6:56 to put the Shoremen up 69-48 with just 6:01 to go following two free throws by Chambers. During the spurt, Schittino canned three triples and the hosts were 11-for-12 from the free throw line. Schittino scored 11 of 13 points, including all of his three of his trifectas, during the run, while Chambers scored six points in the game decisive spurt. The guests would get it to 14 points at 71-57 with 1:52 left, but would draw no closer. The game was a see-saw affair early as the lead changed seven times in the first half. With Washington trailing 24-23 with 4:31 to go in the first, the Shoremen responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for the rest of the game. Junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) canned a pair of free throws to give the hosts a 25-24 lead with 4:19 left in the opening half. On the next possesion, Washington's Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) tallied a steal and found senior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) for a fast-break layup to put the hosts up 27-24 just 16 seconds later. Washington got two free throws from senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) to make it 29-24 with 2:27 to go in the stanza. Chambers completed the spurt when he drained a three-pointer to make it 32-24 with 1:57 left. The Shoremen led 34-29 when Breslin splashed a long trifecta with 10 ticks left on the clock to put the hosts up 37-29 and that would be the score at the half. Schittino netted his 13 points in only 14 minutes of action for Washington. Green was the hosts third scorer in double figures as he scored 10 points in the win. Kohlrus led all players with six rebounds and five assists while tying for game-high in steals with three. Also recording three steals was teammate, freshman forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Deleone Catholic). For McDaniel, McKay led all players with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor. Arrington added 11 points and tied Michael Jarboe for the team lead in assists with three. Arrington also grabbed four rebounds, sharing tops on the team with Louis Sarris-Grau. Sarris-Grau and Kevin Henry each blocked two shots to lead all players. McDaniel shot 46% in the game to just 42% for Washington, but the Shoremen shot 61% from three-point range (8-for-13), while the Green Terror were 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The hosts outscored the guests with bench points (33-17), transition points (8-0) and points off turnovers (20-15). The Shoremen cashed in on 81% of their free throws (26-for-32), while the Green Terror shot just 61% (17-for-28) from the charity stripe. McDaniel outscored Washington in points in the paint by a 30-24 margin. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Swarthmore. |
