2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD Senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored a game-high 19 points and freshman guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored 10 of his 12 points in the final six minutes of the game as visiting Washington College topped host Johns Hopkins, 79-73, tonight at Goldfarb Gymnasium for the Shoremen's first road win over the Blue Jays in nearly 21 years. The Shoremen (8-10, 5-6 Centennial Conference) led by as many as eight points during the first half and took a 36-30 lead into the intermission. Washington held a 55-45 lead with 11:01 remaining in the second half before a 9-0 run by the Blue Jays (11-7, 6-5), capped off by a lay-up by Colin Kamm trimmed the lead to 55-54 with 6:12 to play. Schittino nailed a three-pointer on the Shoremen's next possession to end the run and hit another with 4:59 to play following a Hopkins basket to give the Shoremen a 61-56 lead. A lay-up by Kohlrus with 4:11 to go increased the lead to 63-56. The Blue Jays again rallied, scoring the next six points to cut the lead to 63-62 on a lay-up by Tim McCarty with 2:50 on the clock. A free throw by Washington junior forward James Whall (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) with 2:34 left and a lay-up by Whall off a directed tip from Kohlrus with 2:09 to play pushed the lead to 66-62. Scott Weisenfeld narrowed the gap to 66-64 with a lay-up with 1:52 to go, but a Kohlrus lay-up 26 seconds later gave the Shoremen a 68-64 lead. A pair of free throws by freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) and two more from Kohlrus extended the margin to 72-64 before a Kamm lay-up made it 72-66 with 51 seconds left. Schittino knocked down a pair of free throws with 48 seconds to go to make it 74-66. Phil Beggans then hit a three-pointer for Hopkins with 38 seconds remaining before Breslin made one-of-two free throws to set the score at 75-69. A Kamm lay-up with 28 seconds to play got the Blue Jays to within four points at 75-71, but Schittino knocked two two more free throws two seconds later to give the Shoremen a 77-71 advantage. Hopkins failed to score on its next possession and Breslin converted a pair of free throws on the other end two seconds later to seal the win. Mike Henrici made a lay-up for Hopkins with six seconds left to provide the final margin. Kohlrus added six rebounds to go along with his 19 points for the Shoremen. Schittino scored his 12 points in just 12 minutes of action, while junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) also finished in double figures in scoring with 10 points. Kamm paced the Blue Jays with 15 points and three steals, while Henrici tallied 14 points and six boards. Weisenfeld finished with 12 points, while Pat O'Connell had 10. The Shoremen shot 48% from the field and 50% (6-of-12) from beyond the arc in the win. The Blue Jays shot 42% from the field and just 2-for-11 from three-point range. Washington also held a 36-31 advantage on the boards. Washington's last road win over the Blue Jays was an 84-76 triumph on February 20, 1988. Hopkins had won the last 18 meetings on its home floor. Tonight's win was also the first for the Shoremen overall against the Blue Jays since a 57-53 victory in Chestertown on February 5, 2005, snapping a seven-game slide. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. game at Gettysburg. |
