11, 2009 HAVERFORD, PA Host Haverford got game-highs of 17 points and eight rebounds from Sam Permutt as the Fords downed visiting Washington College, 53-45, in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday night at Gooding Arena. The Fords improved to 11-10 overall and 8-7 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 10-12 and 7-8 respectively with the loss. With the score even at 34-34 with 9:30 to go in the contest, the Fords netted six straight points to take a 40-34 lead with 8:01 remaining on a basket by Brent Anderson as the hosts scored on three consecutive possessions and took the lead for good. The Fords extended the lead to nine points at 47-38 when Greg Rosnick scored on a fast-break layup with 5:13 to go. The Shoremen scored five of the next seven points to cut the Fords' lead to 49-43 with 90 seconds to go. Haverford answered with a Anderson transition layup to extend the lead to 51-43 with 1:21 left and would hold on for the win. The Fords jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead in the first 5:43 of the game that was capped on a three-pointer by Matthew Palmer. The Shoremen would respond with a 9-0 run to take a 12-9 lead and forced Haverford to call a timeout. Freshman forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) closed out the spurt on a jumper. The hosts scored six of the next eight points to regain the lead at the 7:09 mark at 15-14 and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the half. The Fords extended their lead to 27-20 on a pair of free throws by Permutt with 2:25 remaining in the first half and took a 27-23 lead into intermission. Washington took its first lead since the 7:10 mark of the first half when junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) drained a triple to give the guests a 28-27 lead with 17:16 to go in the second. Haverford responded with five straight points to lead 32-28, but Washington countered with four consecutive points of its own to knot the game at 32-32 with 14:21 to go. Rosnick added 11 points for the hosts on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor. Haverford shot 41% from the floor and held a 36-34 edge on the boards in the game. For the guests, senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) and freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) finished with nine points apiece. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against McDaniel. |
