Haverford Wins Game On Layup With 1.5 Ticks Left

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Haverford's Sam Permutt converted a fast-break layup with 1.5 seconds left as the visiting Fords downed host Washington College, 59-57, on Monday night in Centennial Conference play at the Cain Athletic Center. The Fords improve to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in conference games, while the Shoremen are 7-10 and 4-6 respectively.

Following a Washington miss with the score level at 57-57, Haverford's Brent Anderson grabbed the rebound, passed it to Greg Rosnick, who dribbled up to around half-court and found a wide open Permutt underneath the basket, who netted the team's lone two transition points of the game to net the final points of the game.

In the first half, Haverford led 21-20, before Washington took its first of the night at 22-21 on a fast-break layup by senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) with 7:20 left in the first. Washington trailed 25-24 before a transition layup by junior guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) gave Washington a 26-25 lead with 5:26 to go and the Shoremen would score eight of the final 13 points in the opening half to take a 34-30 lead into the break.

The Shoremen took their largest lead of the night at 43-35 with 16:31 left in the game on three free throws from Kohlrus. Washington led 47-41 with 13:51 remaining before Haverford made its run, holding the Shoremen without a field for the next 8:15. Haverford scored the next five points to trim it to 47-46. After two free throws by freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) gave the hosts a 49-46 cushion with 7:24 remaining, the Fords scored the next four points to take their first lead since the opening half at 50-49 with 5:58 left.

Kohlrus responded with a triple from the left corner to put Washington back up top 52-50. Rosnick answered right back for Haverford with a jumper to even the tilt at 52-52. With the score knotted at 56-56, Breslin hit one of two free throws to give the hosts a 57-56 lead with 57 seconds to go. Following a loose ball foul call on Washington, Haverford's Anderson connected on one of two from the charity stripe to level the score at 57-57 with 43 ticks to go. It would stay that way until Permutt's layup.

Rosnick led the Fords with 19 points, while Anderson added 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Matthew Palmer had game-bests of six assists and three steals.

Kohlrus netted 22 points to lead all players on the night, while Chambers scored 15 points. Breslin tallied 11 points and led all players with nine rebounds, also a career-high for the guard.

Haverford outscored Washington, 34-24, in the paint and 17-10 on points off turnovers. The Shoremen held a 8-2 edge on transition points and a 35-29 edge on rebounds. Each team scored 10 points off of second chance opportunities.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
