Bullets Clip Shoremen, 73-69
Kohlrus Surpasses 1,000 Career Points in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Gettysburg College used a decisive 9-1 run in the second half to build a double-digit lead and hold on for a 73-69 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory over host Washington College tonight at Cain Athletic Center. The Bullets (7-2, 2-1 Centennial) got 15 points from Andrew Powers in the win. Senior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) became the 33rd Shoreman to reach 1,000 points during the loss for Washington (4-6, 1-2).

Gettysburg held a 30-23 lead before Kohlrus drilled a three-pointer with 2:00 left in the first half to give him 1,001 career points and ignite a 13-4 period-ending run. The half ended when Kohlrus found junior forward Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) for a three-pointer to give the Shoremen a 36-34 advantage at the break.

The two teams exchanged leads early in the second half before the Bullets took the lead for good a Powers lay-up with 11:59 remaining which made the score 49-48 in Gettysburg's favor. The Bullets were clinging to a 54-52 advantage with 9:27 remaining before running off eight unanswered points to extend the lead to 63-53 with 5:46 to go on a lay-up Dan Capkin. The Bullet margin later grew to 11 points on a lay-up by Chris Nevolo with 1:55 to go which made the score 70-59. The Shoremen scored eight of the next nine points to pull within four at 71-67 on a three-pointer by freshman guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) with 23 seconds left, but could get no closer.

Powers scored his 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and three-of-three shooting at the charity stripe. Joe Spierenburg added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots, while Paul Crone scored 10 points off the bench for Gettysburg.

Kines paced all scorers with a career-high 22 points and also brought down seven rebounds. Kohlrus added 14 points, while Breslin tallied 11 for Washington. Junior guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) brought down a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end.

Gettysburg shot 49% from the field in the game, while the Shoremen shot just 31%. Washington stayed in the contest by committing six fewer turnovers than the Bullets (11 to 17) and holding a 45-38 advantage on the boards, including a 25-10 margin on the offensive end.

The Shoremen, whose last five games have each been decided by fewer than five points, return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Franklin & Marshall.
