Shoremen Ground Sea Gulls, 73-66
Kohlrus Nets Game-Best 23 Points; Hampton With Game-High Five Assists

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored a game-best 23 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as Washington College downed Delmarva rival Salisbury, 73-66, in non-conference men's basketball action on Monday night at the Cain Athletic Center. The Shoremen improve to 3-8 on the season, while the Sea Gulls fall to 2-10.

The host Shoremen led 41-35 at halftime, but the Sea Gulls opened the second half on a 9-3 run to knot the game at 44-44 with 16:38 left on a layup by Brandon Abney. Washington answered immediately with a 12-0 run to take a 56-44 lead with 12:27 remaining in the game. Sophomore guard Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) scored six of the 12 points during the run.

Salisbury trailed 61-49 with 10:23 left before going on a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 65-62 with 3:04 remaining. On Washington's next possession, sophomore guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) drove to the basket, hit the layup and was fouled. He netted his free throw to complete the traditional three-point play to make it 68-62 with 2:39 left in the game. It was his lone points of the game. The Sea Gulls would draw no closer and the Shoremen hung on for the victory in their final non-conference game.

In the opening half, Salisbury jumped out to an 11-5 lead 8:28 into the contest. Washington scored nine of the next 12 points to even the tilt at 14-14 with 9:15 remaining in the opening half. With the score even at 26-26 with 4:53 to go in the first half, the Shoremen went on a 15-9 run to take a 41-35 lead into intermission.

Hampton dished out game-bests of five assists and three steals, to go along with seven rebounds in the victory. Junior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) scored 15 points and Chambers added 11 points, all coming in the second half.

For Salisbury, Jonas Vaitkus tallied a double-double with a team-high 18 points and a game-best 16 rebounds. Greg Palmer had 16 points, while Gary Ward had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Sea Gulls.

The Shoremen converted 23 free throws in the win, to just 11 for the Sea Gulls. Washington shot 40%, while Salisbury shot 39% from the floor. The Sea Gulls controlled the boards by a 47-36 margin. Salisbury had 24 turnovers to just 12 turnovers for Washington. The Shoremen scored 20 points off of the 24 Salisbury turnovers.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg.
