Seahawks Best Shoremen, 73-60
Kohlrus Scores 25 for WC in First Round of Provident Pride

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting St. Mary's College used an 11-1 run in the second half to take control of the game en route to a 73-60 victory over host Washington College in the first round of the Provident Bank Pride of Maryland Tournament tonight at Cain Athletic Center. The Seahawks improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Neither team had a lead of more than five points in the first half and Washington took a 35-32 advantage into the intermission. The Seahawks then scored seven of the first nine points in the second half and led, 41-37, following a lay-up by Alex Franz with 16:13 remaining. The Shoremen managed to trim the lead back to one when a lay-up and free throw by sophomore forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) cut the margin to 45-44 with 14:24 on the clock.

The Seahawks then went on their decisive run, which was finished off by a steal and lay-up by Calvin Wise that made the score 56-45 in favor of the Seahawks with 11:49 to play. The Shoremen scored the next seven points to pull within four points at 56-52 with 8:32 remaining, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

St. Mary's enjoyed a 49-34 advantage on the boards in the game, spearheaded by the play of Wise and Alex Irmer. Irmer pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, including a tournament-record 11 on the offensive end, to go along with 16 points. Wise added 10 rebounds in addition to his team-high 17 points and two blocked shots.

Mike Smelikson and Alex Franz added 11 points each for the Seahawks. Smelikson also dished out a game-best five assists, while Franz swiped a tournament record-tying six steals. St. Mary's had 15 steals as a team, which also tied a tournament record.

Junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) supplied the Shoremen with a game-high 25 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 shooting at the free throw line. He also pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds. Chambers finished with 10 points, while sophomore guard James Restrepo (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area) added nine. Sophomore guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) swiped a team-high five steals for the Shoremen.

St. Mary's advances to the semifinals of the winner's bracket as the Provident Bank Pride of Maryland Tournament moves to Johns Hopkins this weekend. St. Mary's will play Hood in an 8:00 p.m. semifinal game Saturday. Washington will play host Johns Hopkins in a consolation semifinal game at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
