2008 CHESTERTOWN, MD Junior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) matched his career high with 21 points as host Washington College survived a second-half rally by visiting McDaniel College to post a 73-66 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory tonight at Cain Athletic Center. It was the first conference win of the season for the Shoremen (4-10, 1-6) and their 15th consecutive home win over the Green Terror (9-5, 4-3). Washington led the entire first half and scored the last seven points of the period to take a 35-24 lead into the intermission. The Shoremen scored 18 of their first-half points off 14 McDaniel turnovers. The Shoremen took their biggest lead of the game following a dunk by sophomore forward James Whall (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) with 12:47 remaining in the game to extend the margin to 50-35. The Green Terror then mounted a furious comeback, going on a 21-5 run over the next 8:07 to take their first lead of the game at 56-55 on a pair of Chris Prior free throws with 4:40 remaining. The lead changed hands on each of the next four possessions before Green buried a three-pointer with 3:11 to go to make it 62-60, giving the Shoremen the lead for good. McDaniel cut the lead down to one twice in the remaining minutes, the second time on a lay-up and free throw by Prior with 36 seconds to go which closed the gap to 67-66. Sophomore guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) netted a pair of free throws for the Shoremen with 33 seconds left to push the lead back to three points. A missed lay-up with 23 seconds left and subsequent foul by McDaniel's Michael Jarboe sent sophomore guard Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) to the line, where he made both tosses to extended the lead to 71-66. Miguel Jones missed a three-pointer with 14 seconds to go for the Green Terror and junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) made two free throws for Washington with five seconds left to provide the final margin. In all, the Shoremen made their final eight free throws of the game. Green's 21 points led all scorers and came on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 3-of-4 shooting at the line. After shooting 28.4% from the field and averaging 7.2 points per game over the first 10 games of the season, Green has heated up over the past four games, pouring in 16 points per game on 59.5% shooting. Kohlrus added 19 points and five boards for the Shoremen, while Kines added 10 points. Sophomore forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) brought down eight rebounds to go along with six points. Kevin Henry paced McDaniel with 15 points, while Prior added 10 points and four steals and Robert Koebke tossed in 10 points of his own. Washington shot 51% from the field and 74% from the free throw line in the win, while McDaniel shot 49% and 61%, respectively. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Dickinson. |
