5, 2007 HAVERFORD, PA Host Haverford College downed visiting Washington College, 71-51, in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game tonight in Haverford, PA. The Fords improved to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-5 and 0-3 with the loss. Both teams came out hot in the first half as the Shoremen and Fords combined to make 16 of the first 19 field-goal attempts of the game. The Shoremen were 9-of-11 to open the game, while the Fords were 7-of-8. Washington grabbed a 21-15 lead following a jumper by junior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) with 12:18 on the clock. The Shoremen then went ice cold, going the next 7:59 without a field goal. The Fords took advantage of the Washington drought, going on a 14-2 run to take a 29-23 lead following a three-pointer by Chaz Thomas with 4:58 left in the half. A Thomas lay-up with 12 seconds remaining in the period gave the Fords their biggest lead of the half and a 37-29 advantage at the intermission. Haverford opened the second half with a 12-6 spurt, increasing the lead to 49-35 on a lay-up by Mike Fratangelo with 13:40 on the clock. The Ford lead later grew to as many as 23 points as Haverford controlled the rest of the contest. Thomas led the Fords with 15 points in the win, while Fratangelo added 13 points and six rebounds. Matt Stitt contributed 10 points for the victors. Green led the Shoremen with 11 points, while junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) finished with 10 points. Haverford shot 57% from the field, 47% from three-point range, and 92% from the free-throw line in the game. Washington shot 42% from the floor and was just 10-of-22 (45.5%) at the charity stripe. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Muhlenberg. |
