2008 GETTYSBURG, PA Host Gettysburg College held off visiting Washington College to post a 77-74 Centennial Conference men's basketball victory tonight in Gettysburg, PA. The Bullets improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 3-9 and 0-5 with the loss. Gettysburg held a 31-19 lead with 6:22 remaining in the first half, but Washington ended the period on a 16-3 run to take a 35-34 lead into the intermission following a lay-up by sophomore forward Andrew Chambers (Williamsport, MD/St. Maria Goretti) with 1:39 on the clock. The Bullets opened up another double-digit lead in the second half, outscoring the Shoremen, 27-13, over the first 11:20 of the period to build a 61-48 lead on a free throw by Dan Capkin with 8:40 remaining. The Shoremen responded with an 18-5 run of their own, tying the score at 68-68 on a lay-up by junior guard Tim Kohlrus (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) with 3:07 to go. Corey Dorsey then netted a pair of free throws and a jumper to give the Bullets a 72-68 advantage with 1:39 remaining. Kohlrus nailed a three-pointer on the next Washington possession to pull Washington within one point at 72-71, but a lay-up by Joe Spierenburg and two Dorsey free throws extended the Gettysburg lead to 76-71 with 40 seconds left. Kohlrus then hit another triple with 32 seconds on the clock to make it 76-74. Spierenburg made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left as the Shoremen got the ball with a chance to tie, but a three-point attempt by sophomore guard James Restrepo (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area) missed with three seconds left as the Bullets held on for the win. Capkin and Dorsey led the way for the Bullets as Capkin was 7-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, en route to 22 points, and Dorsey poured in 21 points. Spierenburg added 13 points, three blocks, and six rebounds, while Andrew Powers brought down nine rebounds, blocked three shots, and scored six points. Kohlrus scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Washington. Sophomore guard Alan Kines (Towson, MD/Towson) matched his career high of 15 points, while junior guard Todd Green (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) scored 13 points and dished out five assists. Chambers contributed six points, five boards, and a career-high eight assists, while sophomore guard Scott Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) recorded nine rebounds and six assists. Gettysburg shot 51% from the floor to Washington's 43% and connected on 7-of-12 three-point attempts as a team. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin & Marshall. |
