Mustangs Strand Shoremen, 5-0
Washington Leaves Runners 17 On Base

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Stevenson University scored three runs in the top of the second inning and added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning as the visiting Mustangs shutout host Washington College, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in the Shoremen's home opener.

Stevenson (10-5) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Mitch Berman plated Griffin Stewart on a single to left field. The Mustangs made it 2-0 when Kyle Van Beek hit a single through the ride side to knock in Justin Anderson. Chris Maienshein drove in Berman on a RBI groundout to cap the three-run rally.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the fifth to provide the final margin. Dustin Tarlow scored on a RBI triple by Wade Keenan to make it 4-0 Stevenson with one out. Keenan would score on a sacrifice fly by George Papuchis to make it 5-0 for the final run of the game.

Washington (4-3), who left 17 runners on base and at least one in every inning, had second and third with one out in the bottom of the first, but could not push a run across. The Shoremen loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but failed to score.

Keenan went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Three Stevenson pitchers combined for the shutout. Steve Krider went the first four innings, John Skrynecki went the next three innings and Jake Sodeman tossed the final two frames. The three pitchers scattered eight hits with Skyrnecki picking up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.

For the Shoremen, senior shortstop Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard), junior third baseman Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) and freshman catcher John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) each tallied two hits. Rolewicz also threw out two would be Stevenson base stealers. Junior pitcher Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) chalked up the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season.

The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. home game against Frostburg State.
