29, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Salisbury University, ranked fourth in Division III, scored two or more runs in five different innings and pounded out 16 hits en route to a 12-3 win over host Washington College in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in the season finale for Washington. The Sea Gulls improved to 36-6 with the win, while the Shoremen conclude their 2009 season with a mark of 16-18. The Sea Gulls got on the board in the top of the second inning when Cody Collins launched his sixth home run of the season to centerfield to put Salisbury up 1-0 and Jordan Crystal scored on a WC error to make it 2-0. Salisbury scored two more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0. Chad Wolfe plated Crystal on a double to make it 3-0 and Wolfe would come around to score on a base hit by Andrew Miller to give Salisbury a four-run lead. The Sea Gulls broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning to take an 8-0 lead and took a 10-0 lead in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by Collins. Washington got onto the board in the bottom of the eighth when freshman Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) doubled in freshman John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) and junior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) to reduce the Sea Gulls' lead to 10-2. Mike Celenza had a two-run base hit in the ninth to give Salisbury a 12-2 lead. The Shoremen got the final run of the game in the bottom half of the ninth when freshman Stephen Cook (Tucker, GA/Lakeside) plated freshman Devon Miller (Danbury, CT/Danbury) on an infield hit for the game's final run. For the Salisbury, Eric Willey got the complete game victory and improves to 9-3. He went the distance for the first time this season, striking out five and scattering seven hits. At the plate for the guests, Collins was 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Celenza was 3-for-5 with two RBI and runs scored. Tallying two hits for the Sea Gulls were Crystal, Miller and Ryan Smith. Wolfe plated two and scored two times himself. Senior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) took the loss for Washington and concludes his season at 2-3. He went 7.2 innings, striking out five on the day. Today was his 50th career game on the mound, the most ever for a WC pitcher. Coveney surpasses, Eric Lickstein '07, who pitched in 49 games for Washington from 2004-07. At the dish, Normoyle went 2-for-4 with two RBI and freshman Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill School) also had two hits. Washington, who won just seven games a season ago, increased its win total by nine victories in 2009. |
