March 10,
2009 COCOA, FL - The Washington College baseball team continued its strong play at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL, today, defeating Norwich, 17-3. The Shoremen (3-0) have now scored exactly 17 runs in each of their first three games this season, marking just the second time in the past 118 years Washington has scored at least 17 runs in three straight games. Junior pitcher Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) fanned 10 Norwich batters to get the win. Washington held a modest 3-2 lead in the game before scoring four times in the top of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. The Shoremen then added one run in each of the next two innings and two in the eighth before scoring six times in the final frame. The Cadets scored their third run in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman shortstop Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, four RBI, and two runs scored for the Shoremen, while senior first baseman Joe Coveney (Madison, N J/Madison) was 4-for-5 with two RBI, a run scored, a walk, and three stolen bases. Freshman left fielder Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill School) went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI, while junior designated hitter Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior right fielder Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Smith was outstanding on the mound in the win, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks in seven innings of work to go along with his 10 strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Paul McMannis (Arbutus, MD/Landsdowne) pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out six. Dustin Fleming went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Cadets in the loss, while Donovan Brown was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. In 1987, Washington scored 17 runs in a win over Wesley and 17 and 21 in two wins of Haverford in three consecutive games. Prior to that, the only time the Washington College baseball team had scored at least 17 runs in at least three straight games was way back in 1891 when WC plated at least 20 runs in four straight wins over local teams. The Shoremen will return to action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game against Oneonta State in Cocoa, FL. |
