17, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Johns Hopkins had four players pound out two hits as the visiting Blue Jays downed host Washington College, 8-2, in a Centennial Conference baseball game on Friday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park. The Blue Jays improved to 15-11 overall and 7-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen dropped to 9-15 and 3-9 with the loss. Johns Hopkins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when James Teta, who led the game off with a double, scored on a wild pitch. The Blue Jays would add three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Ryan Biner plated Teta on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0, Todd Emr doubled home Dan Merzel to push it to 3-0 and the rally was capped by when Brian Youchak pushed home Emr on a single up the middle to give the visitors a 4-0 cushion. Washington trimmed the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2. Freshman Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who led off the frame with a single, scored on a two-bagger off the bat of junior Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton). Boucher came home courtesy of a triple off the bat of senior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern). Hopkins tallied one run in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2. Merzel singled to lead off the inning, then stole second and third base and would score on an Emr groundout. The Blue Jays added three runs in the top of the eighth to provide the final margin. Biner would score on an RBI single by Lee Bolyard to make it 6-2 and on the same play, Emr would come around to score on a Shoremen fielding error to put Hopkins up 7-2. Bolyard scored the final run of the game on a throwing error by WC. Bolyard, Emr, Merzel and Teta each went 2-for-4 on the day, with Emr, Merzel and Teta both scoring two times. Emr led all players with two RBI in the game. On the mound, Marco Simmons tossed a complete game to improve to 2-2 on the season. He struck out 13 Shoremen on the afternoon and walked just one. He scattered four hits and allowed only two runs. Boucher was 2-for-4 on the afternoon, with a run scored and an RBI for Washington, with both of his hits being doubles. Senior pitcher Matt Swanson (Highland, MD/Mount St. Joseph) took the loss and falls to 3-2. He went 7 1/3 innings, striking out four Blue Jay batters on the day. The Shoremen return to the diamond for a doubleheader against visiting Dickinson in Centennial Conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with the dedication to Athey Baseball Park in honor of long-time Washington College head baseball coach and Athletic Director Ed Athey '47 beginning at 12:00 p.m. |
