28, 2009 HAVERFORD, PA - Visiting Washington College snapped an eight-game losing streak to host Haverford in the opener as the Shoremen scored a 10-7 win over the Fords. Haverford rallied to take game two by a 9-5 score in a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon at The Class of 1916 Field. The Fords are now 7-9-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Shoremen are 7-8 and 1-3 in the Centennial with the split. The win in game one snapped an eight-game losing streak for Washington against the Haverford nine. The last victory versus the Fords was an 8-2 win on April 23, 2004 in Chestertown. It was also Washington's first victory at Haverford since a 2-1 triumph on April 5, 2000. In game one, the freshman John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) put the Shoremen up 2-0 in the top of the second inning on a double that scored two runners. In the top of the fourth, senior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) led off the frame with a home run to right field to put Washington up 3-0. Junior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) plated junior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) on a single to put the visitors up 4-0. Haverford cut the Washington to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Mike Galetta, but WC answered with two of its own to increase its lead to 6-2. Freshman Ben Keaton (Arlington, VA/Flint Hill School) scored on a bases loaded walk and Tozzolo crossed on a fielder's choice. The Shoremen increased their lead to 10-2 in the top of the sixth with a four-run inning. Kramer made it 7-2 on an RBI single and Rolewicz drove in the second run of the inning to make it 8-2. Senior Ben Kaplan (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) hit a two-run single to cap the four-run rally. Haverford got two runs in its half of the sixth on a two-run home run by Jeremy Zoll to cut the lead to 10-4. The Fords made one final charge as they scored three runs in the seventh inning to trim the WC lead to 10-7. Zoll plated two runs to cut it to 10-6 and Alex Spiliotes reduced the Washington lead to 10-7 on an RBI single. Haverford had the tying run at the plate, but senior pitcher Matt Swanson (Highland, MD/Mount St. Joseph) struck out Bobby Bailey to end the game. Junior Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) got the victory and improves to 2-2, while Jonny Williams took the loss and falls to 0-1. Tozzolo went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs scored, while Kramer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Rolewicz had four RBI and Keaton scored three times in the victory. Kaplan and Keiper each plated two RBI. For Haverford, Zoll was 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Jake Chaplin was 3-for-4, while Jeff Butera was 2-for-4 and scored three times. In game two, with the score tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Fords scored four runs to take control of the game. Louis DeRosa led off the frame with a walk and scored on a fielder's choice with one out to put the Fords up 6-5. Dean Laganosky scored on a Washington error to increase the lead to 7-5. Zoll capped the four-run rally with a two-run single to right field to make it 9-5. WC's Rolewicz hit his first career home run to put the vistors up 1-0 in the top of the second. In bottom half of the frame, Zoll scored Charlie Carluccio on an RBI groundout to tie it at 1-1 and the next batter, Spiliotes drove in Butera on another run scoring grounder to put the Fords up 2-1. In the top of the third, senior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) leveled the game at 2-2 when he crossed home plate on a throwing error. Haverford regained the lead in its half of the third when Jamie Hollowell went deep to make it 3-2. The Fords added two runs in the fifth when Hollowell scored on a groundout and Butera singled to right to knock in Laganosky. Washington used the long ball to score three in the top of the sixth. Tozzolo trimmed the Haverford lead to 5-3 when he launched his second home run of the twinbill on a shot to centerfield. After a single by Kramer up the middle, Rolewicz cranked his second longball of game two to knot the score at 5-5. Stefan Pappius-Lefebvre got the win to improve to 2-2, while sophomore A.J. Hill (Duluth, MN/Lakeside (GA) took the loss and falls to 0-1. Butera and Zoll drove in three and two RBI respectively in the win. For Washington, Rolewicz was 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI. Also for the Shoremen nine, Coveney and Kramer each pounded out three hits in game two. Washington returns to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. away game against Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore. |
