Bullets Take Both Ends of Twinbill
Coveney Strikes Out A Career-High Nine Batters

GETTYSBURG, PA - Host Gettysburg College won both ends of a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon over visiting Washington College at Kirchoff Field. In the opener, the Bullets grabbed a 3-1 victory and took the nightcap by a 15-3 margin. The Bullets improve to 12-12 overall and 5-1 in conferece play, while the Shoremen are now 8-11 overall and 2-5 respectively.

In the opener, Gettysburg took advantage of two Washington errors in the bottom of the fourth to plate a run and take a 1-0 lead. The Shoremen would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. With two outs, senior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) plated fellow classmate, Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard) on an infield single.

The Bullets scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to score the winning runs. Matt Karis scored on a bad throw by Washington to put Gettysburg up 2-1. Kevin Langhauser gave the hosts an insurance run when he singled to left field to score Drew Roy and made it 3-1 to provide the final margin.

Karis tallied the victory in game one, scattering seven hits and striking out five in going the distance. He is now 4-1 on the season. Senior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) was the tough luck loser and falls to 0-1. He struck out a career-high nine batters, walked none and gave up just five hits. He allowed three runs, but only one earned run. Washington junior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) was the only player to work out a walk in the contest and all four runs in game one were scored with two outs.

In game two, the Bullets scored a minimum of one run in each of the first seven innings to post a 15-3 win. Gettysburg scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. The Bullets scored one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead after five. Washington got one in the top of the sixth to get on the board, but the Bullets responded with two in the bottom half of the frame to expand their lead to 12-1. The Shoremen plated two in the top of the seventh to trim the hosts lead to 12-3, but Gettysburg answered with three in its half of the inning to go up 15-3 and that would be the final.

For the hosts, Mike Backus, Craig Barrows and Chris Simard each totaled three hits in the nightcap, with Backus and Roy each driving in three runs apiece. Simard and Augie Stadtmuller both scored three times to lead all players. Barrows and Cam Riera each crossed home twice and Barrows knocked in two teammates. Kyle Conklin got the win on the mound, allowing just one run in six innings, striking out seven and allowing just one run. He is now 2-1 on the campaign.

For the guests, freshman Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill School) went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while freshman John Lambert (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) went 2-for-2 with two RBI for Washington. On the hill, junior Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the loss, lasting just two innings and falls to 2-3.

The Shoremen return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon to play visiting Swarthmore in a Centennial Conference tilt at 3:30 p.m.
