18, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visting Frostburg State University scored at least one run in eight of the nine innings and all nine starting hitters got a hit as the Bobcats downed host Washington College, 19-12, on Wednesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park. The Bobcats improve to 7-7 on the season, while the Shoremen fall to 4-4. After Frostburg State got two runs in the top of the first inning, the Shoremen responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead after one. Freshman Ben Keaton (Arlington, VA/Flint Hill School) cracked a three-run home run to left-center for his first career long ball to put the hosts up 3-2. Washington made it 4-2 when the next batter, senior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) launched a solo shot to left-center. Washington made it 5-2 in the bottom of the second when freshman Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) cranked his first career home run on a blast to center. Each team would score a run in the third and the Shoremen would take a 6-3 lead going into the top of the fourth. The Bobcats scored six runs in the top of fourth, with just one of them being earned to take a 9-6 lead. Joe Garrity led off the inning with a double and would score on Andrew Sacks two-bagger to cut the Washington to 6-4. With two outs, Pat Sapp's ball was mishandled by the Shoremen fielder allowing two runs to score and tied the game at 6-6. The next batter, Timothy Sutcliffe launched a three-run home run to left field to make it 9-6. Frostburg State added two runs in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Mike Jester and a throwing error that allowed Andrew Derr to score from third base to make it 11-6 Bobcats. The Shoremen got one back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Keaton the scored junior Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) to cut the Bobcat lead to 11-7. The visitors tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 14-7, while the hosts responded with one in the bottom half of the inning to trim it to 14-8. Frostburg State added one run each in the seventh and eighth innings to make it 16-8 and plated three more in the ninth to make it 19-8. Washington would score four runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 19-12 and provide the final margin. For the Bobcats, Sutcliffe went 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored, Jester knocked in four runs, went 3-for-5 and scored three times and Derr was also 3-for-5 with two RBI and crossed the plate on three occasions. Garrity went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and Teon Richberg went 2-for-5 for the guests. David Lanier tossed 4.2 innings of relief to pick up the victory and improves to 1-0 on the season, while Gary Wolfe pitched the last 3.1 innings to notch his second save of the campaign. For the Shoremen, Keaton and Normoyle each went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Keaton knocked in four runs, while Normoyle drove in two runs. Senior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Also scoring two runs for Washington was Boucher and Tozzolo. Sophomore pitcher Harry Woods (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) took the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season. Washington hosts CCNY on Friday in a doubleheader with the twinbill commencing at 1:00 p.m. |
