Catholic Downs Washington, 5-2
Boucher and Kramer With Two Hits Each

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Catholic University used a three-run top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Patrick Quintana, to snap a 1-1 tie and go on to a 5-2 victory over host Washington College on Thursday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference baseball play. The Cardinals improve to 11-11 with the victory, while the Shoremen fall to 8-9 with the loss.

Each team scored one run in the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Catholic's Joseph Devine began the rally with a two-out single. The next batter, Eamonn Burke doubled to right-center to plate Devine and put the Cardinals up 1-0. The Shoremen leveled the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off the inning with a two-bagger and scored on a Catholic fielding error.

The Cardinals took control of the game with a three-run fifth inning. Mike Goodman led off the inning with a single down the left field line. The next batter, Quintana, cranked a two-run home run over the left field wall to put the guests up 3-1. Catholic added another run in the inning when Tommy Bowles singled in LJ Travaglia.

Washington got a run back in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 4-2 when junior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored on a foul pop.

The Cardinals scored one run in the top of the ninth on a Tommy Little two-out triple that plated Travaglia to provide the final margin.

Kevin Sweeney registered his first win of the season and is now 1-2. He tossed eight innings, striking out seven, scattering four hits, allowing two runs and just one of them being earned. Michael Bzozowski tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of 2009. At the plate, Travaglia was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Devine was 2-for-3 with a run.

Freshman Steve Cameron (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) took the loss and falls to 0-1. He went five innings, allowing four runs and striking out six in five innings of work. At the dish, Kramer and junior Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) both tallied two hits.

Washington returns to Centennial Conference action tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. tilt against visiting Swarthmore.
