20, 2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD - Host Washington College swept a doubleheader versus the City College of New York on Friday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park. The Shoremen downed the Beavers, 8-1, in game one and scored a 12-2 victory in game two. Washington improves to 6-4 overall, while CCNY drops to 0-13. In game one, the Beavers scored their lone run of the game in the second inning when Rich Santiago singled to centerfield to plate Pavel Cruz to put the visitors up 1-0. Washington would plate three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) tripled to right-center that scored senior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison). Freshman Ben Keaton (Arlington, VA/Flint Hill School) put the Shoremen up for good when he knocked in Tozzolo on a double. The hosts capped the three-run inning when Keaton scored on a fielding error by CCNY. The Shoremen scored three more runs in the fifth inning when Coveney drove in two on a double down the left field line. Coveney scored on a RBI single by Tozzolo to put Washington up 6-1 after five innings. The Shoremen added two more in the sixth on a two-run single by freshman Tony Oktela (Willow Street, PA/Penn Manor) to provide the final margin. Coveney, Tozzolo and junior Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) both went 2-for-3 in the opener with Coveney and Tozzolo each plating two. Senior pitcher Matt Swanson (Highland, MD/Mount St. Joseph) went the distance, scattering three hits and striking out eight. He struck out the side in the sixth inning. For CCNY, Alexander Dadras took the loss. In game two, CCNY scored two runs in the top of the first to grab a quick 2-0. Armando Wellington scored from second base on a sacrifice bunt by Pat Berry to make it 1-0 and Paul Rojas crossed home plate via a fielding error to make it 2-0. Washington got one run back in the bottom of the frame when senior Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard) scored on a balk. The Shoremen scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) evened the game at 2-2 when he scored on a fielder's choice and Oktela put the Shoremen up for good when he scored on a throwing error. The Shoremen busted open the game with a six-run bottom of the third inning. Coveney plated Boucher on a double down the right field line to make it 4-2. Coveney scored from third to put the hosts up 5-2 when CCNY threw down to second to nail a would be Washington base stealer. Senior Jim Bannar (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) notched his first career triple to score Kramer and make it 6-2 WC. Freshman Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) hit a two-run double to increase the leads host to 8-2. Perret capped the six-run frame when he tripled home Normoyle to put the Shoremen up 9-2. Washington added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to provide the final margin, Perret spearheaded the Washington attack in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Normoyle knocked in three RBI in the triumph. Coveney was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Also scoring two runs in the nightcap for the Shoremen were Kramer, Bannar and senior Doug Lutz (Pitman, NJ/Pitman). On the mound, junior pitcher Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) picked up the victory to go to 1-0 on the season. He struck out a career-high 11 batters, allowed just four hits and retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced in going the entire way. He fanned five of the final six batters he faced. For the Beavers, Santiago took the loss as he went the first two innings of game two. Wellington went 2-for-3 with a run scored for CCNY in the second contest. Washington hosts Ithaca tomorrow with first pitch scheduled at 1:00 p.m. |
