2008 COCOA, FL - Sophomore first baseman Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) went 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored as the Washington College baseball team posted the 1,000th victory in program history by defeating Old Westbury, 22-5, in the Shoremen's final game at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL. Washington improved to 3-4 on the season with the victory. Old Westbury (1-9) held a 2-1 lead in the game before the Shoremen plated six runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump in front, 7-2. Senior outfielder James Tidwell (Newark, DE/Charter School of Wilmington) and junior second baseman Ben Kaplan (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) each had an RBI single before Boucher drove in three runs with a triple to right center. Boucher later scored on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) to provide Washington's sixth run of the inning. The Panthers got two runs back in the top of the third as Ryan Blanco had an RBI ground out and Emmanuel Mateo hit an RBI single to make it 7-4. The Shoremen scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Boucher and an RBI ground out by Kramer. The Shoremen tacked on five more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Kaplan, a two-run single by junior shortstop Greg Perret (Morris Plains, NJ/Bayley Ellard), a wild pitch that scored Perret, and an RBI double by Kramer. Washington then unloaded for eight runs in the eighth inning. The eight-run frame included an RBI single by Boucher, a two-run single by junior outfielder Chris O'Donovan (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis), and a three-run double by junior catcher Jim Bannar (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West). Anthony Fernandez scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the ninth to account for Old Westbury's fifth run of the game. Six Shoremen joined Boucher with multiple hits in the game. Kaplan was 3-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored, while Perret was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Tidwell, Kramer, O'Donovan, and junior outfielder Dan DeMarco (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) each had two hits in the game. Tidwell also walked, stole base, drove in a run, and scored three runs. Kramer drove in four runs, O'Donovan knocked in two runs and scored another, and DeMarco scored two runs. The Shoremen totaled 21 hits in the game. Washington sophomore pitcher Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) was credited with the win in relief, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out three batters in three innings of work. The win was the first of Keiper's collegiate career. The Shoremen have scored a combined 59 runs in their three wins this season and four runs in their four losses. Baseball results at Washington College date back to 1871, when the school recorded a pair of victories over local town teams. The Shoremen's all-time record stands at 1,000-868-25. The Shoremen will return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Villa Julie. |
