Shoremen Secure Split Against Red Devils
Win Game Two After Falling In Opener

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Host Washington College rallied from a 4-1 deficit in game two to post an 8-6 victory over visiting Dickinson College in a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Athey Field. The Red Devils took game one by a 2-0 margin. Washington is now 6-14 overall and 2-9 in conference play, while Dickinson is 9-19 and 4-8 respectively.

In the second game, Washington trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored three runs to even the game at 4-4. Junior Tony Tozzolo (Calvert County, MD/Northern) singled to right field to drive in junior Chris O'Donovan (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) to cut it to 4-2. Sophomore Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) knocked in Tozzolo on a bases loaded walk to cut it to 4-3. The Shoremen tied the game when sophomore Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) scored from third base on a failed pickoff attempt of Kramer at first base when the throw got away from the Dickinson first baseman.

The hosts took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the seventh when Kramer doubled to left field, scoring junior Joe Coveney (Madison, NJ/Madison) from second base to give Washington a 5-4 edge. Kramer would make it 6-4 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Dickinson cut it to 6-5 in the top of the eighth when Robert Gilcrest doubled to left-center to plate Evan Hennessy. In the bottom of the eighth, the Shoremen made it 8-5 when Kramer drove in Tozzolo on an infield single and Coveney would score when the throw to first that Kramer beat out got away.

The Red Devils trimmed the deficit to 8-6 in the top of the ninth when Bart Marchant scored on a WC throwing error. Dickinson had the tying run at the plate, but junior Matt Swanson (Highland, MD/Mount St. Joseph) struck out Benjamin Werthen to end the game.

Freshman Paul McMannis (Arbutus, NJ/Lansdowne) picked up his first collegiate victory and improves to 1-0 with Swanson picking up his first career save by retiring the final two batters. McMannis struck out a career-best seven hitters in 3 2/3 innings of work. Dickinson's Matt Walters takes the loss and falls to 0-2.

For Washington, Kramer went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the contest, while Tozzolo went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. For Dickinson, Gilcrest went 4-for-5 with an RBI and Evan Farha went 2-for-3 and crossed home plate twice.

In the opener, Dickinson would score all the runs they needed to win the game in the top of the first. Gilcrest hit a blooper over the first baseman to drive in Mike Schuster and Michael Lapicki would score on the same play when the Shoremen had trouble fielding the ball. The play gave the Red Devils a 2-0 lead and the score would hold up. The Shoremen did not get a runner past second base in game one.

Hennessy went 3-for-3 with the game's lone RBI in the opener, while Schuster and Dustin Cohen each had two hits apiece for the visitors.

Brian Kelley chalked up the shutout victory for Dickinson and improves to 4-2 on the season. He allowed just three hits and struck out four in going the distance. Washington's Chris Smith (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the loss and falls to 2-5. He allowed just two runs, one earned and fanned four.

The Shoremen will travel to McDaniel on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game in Westminster, MD.
