Celebrate 50 Years of Rowing at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — From humble beginnings as a club sport operating out of a chicken coop, rowing at Washington College has grown into one of the College's most-successful sports. Now, join us as we celebrate 50 years of rowing at Washington College.

The "50 Years of Rowing" campaign seeks to raise $100,000 to provide two new shells for our men's and women's rowing teams. The campaign will also feature a special alumni event on Sunday, June 3rd (during the College's Alumni Weekend). That event will include the dedication of new rowing shells, tributes to former head coaches Mike Davenport and John Leekley, an alumni regatta with the Eastern Shore Community Rowers, and a cookout with the Washington College community.

Competing as a non-NCAA sport, the Washington College men's rowing team regularly goes up against crews from schools from all NCAA divisions. The Shoremen have made their mark throughout their program's existence. With a number of IRA and Dad Vail medal-winning crews in their history, they have long been established as one of the Mid-Atlantic's top small-school men's rowing programs. In recent years, the Shoremen have also won five Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships.

Since the establishment of women's rowing as an NCAA Division III sport, the Washington College women's rowing team has been the unquestioned premier Division III program in the Mid-Atlantic Region. After receiving two at-large eight bids to the NCAA Division III Championships in 2008 and 2009, the Shorewomen have received full-team bids to the NCAA Championships each of the past five seasons. The Shorewomen have captured seven of the nine MARC Women's Championships in the conference's history thus far.

Both the Shoremen and Shorewomen will seek to win MARC Championships at the conference's annual championship regatta on Saturday, April 28th, at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Lewisberry, Pa. Their final regatta before that date is this Saturday as they will compete at the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia.
